SEATTLE – Riley Grigsby and Cameron Tyson combined for 41 points on the day, but a hot-shooting performance from Virginia Military Institute helped snap a six-game win streak for Seattle U men's basketball in an 89-82 final Sunday afternoon at Climate Pledge Arena.
The Redhawks (7-2) came out early in the game with a solid shooting performance and were able to build up a nine-point lead at the 9:52 mark. Grigsby had nine of his eventual 21 points in the opening half while Tyson added in another eight.
Despite the SU start, VMI (6-4) was able to put together a 9-0 scoring run in the final two minutes of the half and head into the locker rooms with a narrow 39-35 lead.
Seattle U did its best to chip away at the Keydets lead in the second half. Darrion Trammell came on strong late as he finished the night with 18 points and 6 assists, making it three Redhawks in double figures on the day.
SU was able to get the game within seven after a Trammell layup at 3:13, but would come no closer in the remaining minutes as the Keydets were able to hold off the comeback attempt.
The loss snapped the Redhawks' streak and halted their undefeated run at home, dropping them to 7-2 on the still young season.
They will look to bounce back as they hit the road for a showdown with UNLV in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The matchup will be the first and only out-of-state game for the Redhawks on the nonconference schedule. Tip-off from Michelob Ultra Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
