DENVER – Emeka Udenyi has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for December 20 through December 26. This marks the first such honor for the junior forward from Oakland, Calif.
Udenyi collected his first triple-double as part of a 100-68 win over Northwest (Wash.). The junior finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in 28 minutes on the floor. He was efficient shooting the ball, making five of eight shots from the field, along with one of two free throws, to get into double-digit scoring. Defensively, he collected 10 of his 12 rebounds on Northwest misses and he turned the ball over just one time while dishing out the 10 assists.
After collecting eight points, nine rebounds and four assists in the first half alone, Udenyi achieved the feat less than seven minutes into the second half. As the Redhawks used their size advantage inside, Udenyi quickly added to his points and rebound totals. Then came the assists. He would hit Chatfield on the low block two possessions in a row for dimes eight and nine. Then he sent a pass to Cameron Tyson on the wing for a long three for assist No. 10.
Udenyi's triple double is one of just nine that have been recorded thus far by a DI player during the 2021-22 season.
Other nominees included: Abilene Christian's Damien Daniels was key off the bench, scoring 17 points and dishing out four assists in a 74-58 win over Longwood … California Baptist's Ty Rowell joined the 1,000-point club with 24 points in an 84-68 win over Southeast Missouri State … Lamar's Jordyn Adams scored 21 points to lead the Cardinals in an 80-77 loss to ULM … NM State's Teddy Allen scored 20 points and brought down nine rebounds as the Aggies improved to 11-2 with an 84-59 win over UT Permian Basin … Sam Houston's Savion Flagg averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Bearkats split a pair of games at the Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso … Tarleton's Freddy Hicks put up 11 points with nine rebounds as the Texans earned a 67-45 win over Air Force … Utah Valley's Fardaws Aimaq recorded his national-best 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds in a 68-52 win at Washington.
