SEATTLE – Fueled by a huge defensive effort, including a season-high 19 steals, Seattle U men's basketball rolled to its sixth straight win, taking down the McNesse State Cowboys, 78-62, Wednesday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
Cameron Tyson continued his excellent start to the season, dropping 23 points and bringing in eight rebounds. Riley Grigsby chipped in 17 points while Darrion Trammell had 10 points to go along with five assists and six steals.
The game had a slow start as neither side could knock down a shot from the field. It was an exchange of free throws for the first 3:40 of the game before Tyson hit his first three of the game to give the Redhawks a 7-1 lead.
The main storyline of the first half was the Redhawks ability to convert McNeese State turnovers to points on the other end. SU forced 10 Cowboy giveaways and scored 18 points off of them. Paired with a solid team shooting effort of 40 percent, Seattle U was able to take a 40-33 lead into the break.
The Redhawks intensity continued into the second half and they were able to string together an early 8-0 scoring run at the 14:06 mark that would push their lead to 13 points. Tyson and Grigsby both scored nine in the half as well as the Redhawks would eventually push their lead to a game high 18 in the final seconds of play.
Kellon Taylor had 12 points to lead all Cowboys, while Collin Warren added another 10 off of the bench.
Seattle U beat the Cowboys at their own game, finishing the night by forcing 27 McNeese State turnovers while committing just nine of their own against a squad that came into the match averaging 12.3 steals per game and 20.4 opponent giveaways.
The win pushed the Redhawks to a 7-1 record on the season, marking the best opening to a season since the 2006-07 season. The win also kept Seattle U a perfect 7-0 at home, including 3-0 inside of Climate Pledge Arena.
The Redhawks will be back in action this Sunday, Dec. 5 when they play host to the Virginia Military Institute. Tip-off between the Keydets and Redhawks is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Climate Pledge Arena.
