SEATTLE – It was a tale of two halves Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Arena between Seattle U and Washington. The Redhawks methodically worked their way to a seven-point halftime lead, but a big momentum swing to open the second put the Huskies in the drivers' seat and the home team would hold on in a 64-56 final.
Riley Grigsby finished with a game-high 20 points and Darrion Trammell added 18 to go along with five assists. Cameron Tyson chipped in eight points with a team high 10 boards.
UW was paced by Emmitt Matthews Jr., which finished with 17 points, including 15 in the second half. Terrell Brown Jr., who played two seasons for Seattle U, added 16 points and PJ Fuller had 11.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well with Seattle U finishing just 35 percent from he field and 6-of-24 from three. UW shot 40 percent overall and was just 2-of-15 from deep. But the Huskies would make 17 additional trips to the charity stripe for a 10-point difference.
The Husky defense also forced an uncharacteristic 18 Seattle U turnovers, turning those into 22 points.
The Redhawks opened the game with great ball movement early, breaking down the UW zone. Grigsby and Trammell each scored 12 points in the frame, while Vasja Pandža knocked down a pair of late threes to help the Redhawks take a 35-28 lead into the break.
But Seattle U was caught on its heels to open the second as UW raced out with a 20-2 run, including a 13-0 stretch. The Redhawks used an 8-3 run to cut it to six, 51-45, before the Huskies pushed it back to double digits then settled for the final eight-point spread.
Seattle U closes out non-conference play on Wednesday, hosting Northwest University at the Redhawk Center. The matinee match-up is set for 2 p.m.
