LAS VEGAS – A back-and-forth game ended with the Seattle U Redhawks falling to the UTEP Miners 57-62 in the final game of the South Point Shootout. After seven ties and nine lead changes, the Redhawks had a chance to tie with the shot clock off in the final seconds of the fourth but couldn't find that final bucket.
Bree Calhoun led all scorers in the game, putting up 16 points, her second time scoring 15+ in the last three games as well as picking up four steals. Taliyah Clark also hit double digits, scoring ten points for the Redhawks.
"It was 40 minutes of effort from our team tonight," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "Bree had a tremendous weekend and helped us compete to the very end. Once again our bench produced and brought a great deal of energy and fire. Every single person person gave us production."
The Redhawks are 3-3 on the season after this weekend's games, splitting their two matchups at the South Point Shootout.
Seattle U would force 17 turnovers in the game but commit 22 of its own, including nine in the first quarter. Even so, hot shooting by the Redhawks kept it a tight game, as did a defense that had seven steals in the first half alone and held UTEP to 35% shooting overall, including 15% from deep.
After UTEP started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run, Seattle U had a 6-0 run of its own. That cut the deficit to just one point with five minutes remaining, but a made three-pointer and a three-point play from UTEP meant the Redhawks couldn't get it backed to tied. Three free throws from UTEP sealed the game, ballooning the final score to a five-point difference.
"The difference-maker tonight was that we just gave up too many offensive rebounds," said Barcomb. "We had the chance to get a win tonight but late execution wasn't in our favor."
With this weekend's action over, the Redhawks will look to their next road trip, heading to Idaho to take on Boise State on Thursday, December 2 at 6:30 pm PT.
