LAS VEGAS  – A shooting flurry in the third quarter was more than enough for the Seattle U Redhawks to defeat the Southern Methodist Mustangs 70-66 at the South Point Shootout. The Redhawks made four threes in the third quarter alone, ending the game shooting 46% from the field and going a perfect 10-for-10 at the line.

"[Jadynn Alexander] was tremendous on the defensive end of the floor and on the glass for us tonight," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb about the linchpin of the defensive effort. "We made some key three-pointers in the second half that allowed us to maintain our lead down the stretch. SMU made a tremendous run in the fourth quarter but we made our clutch free throws down the stretch and carved out a big road win."

McKenzi Williams led the way offensively, scoring 16 points on 50% shooting to lead the team. Georgia Kehoe had ten points on the night, as well as becoming the tenth Redhawk in the program's Division I history to record 50 career blocks after swatting three shots. It was Kehoe's fifth game of 3+ blocks since the beginning of last season. Peyton Howard had two steals to go along with seven points and a career-best seven rebounds.

The win moves the Redhawks to 3-2 overall on the year with another game coming up tomorrow night.

Seattle U's defense was there from the tip, holding SMU to 23% shooting in the first quarter. In all, Seattle U allowed just nine makes in the first half, holding SMU to 31% shooting, though a free-throw disparity in SMU's favor meant it was still just a seven-point game at the break.

That lead grew quickly for the Redhawks, who poured in 18 points in the third quarter while keeping up the strong defense, this time forcing the Mustangs into 31% shooting. Despite forcing six turnovers in the fourth quarter, the Redhawks fought through another close finish, coming out with the win after a pair of clutch free throws by Alexander with 11 seconds remaining put the game out of reach.
