SEATTLE – Five Redhawks reached double figures as Seattle U men's basketball pick up its third straight win, taking down the Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions 77-56 Monday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
The Golden Lions (0-5) jumped out to a 6-0 lead within the first four minutes of game action before Seattle U got rolling shortly after. The opening half saw three lead changes and five different points of tied action.
The Redhawks struggled to find offensive flow in the opening frame. A great effort by Darrion Trammell, who scored 10 of his 12 total points in the frame, helped keep them in it early. The Redhawks eventually went on a late 7-0 run and went into the break knotted up with the Lions at 31.
"In the first half we weren't playing Seattle U basketball," said Interim Head Coach Chris Victor. "We weren't pushing pace or moving the ball offensively. The energy and intensity on defense wasn't there."
The halftime adjustments heavily favored the home side as they dominated across the board in the second half. Not only did they shoot an impressive 53 percent from the floor, they also played great as a team racking up 13 assists.
Defense was a factor as well, as the Redhawks held the Golden Lions to 34 percent shooting and forced them into 14 turnovers.
Riley Grigsby had the hot hand in a close out effort scoring 14 of his eventual game-high 21 in the second half. Cameron Tyson continued his double-digit scoring streak with 15, while Kobe Williamson (12 pts) and Emeka Udenyi (10 pts) were a big boost off of the bench.
Behind a 15-0 run in the last 10 minutes of action, the Redhawks were able to push their lead to 21 and secure the 77-56 victory.
"We talked at halftime and challenged the guys, and they came out and responded," said Victor. "And what a second half. We had great ball movement and were sharing the ball high level. When that happens, our offensive is so much potent. You see a lot of weapons on the offensive end when we share the basketball and force the defense to guard multiple guys."
Arkansas Pine Bluff was led by Brandon Brown and Shawn Williams who combined for 33 points in the loss.
The win marks the fourth of the season for the Redhawks and keeps them a perfect 4-0 in home games and 4-1 on the season.
Seattle U has a quick turnaround as they will play host to Pacific Lutheran tomorrow, Nov. 23 at the Redhawk Center. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
