SEATTLE - The Seattle U Redhawks welcomed two new additions to the coaching staff for the 2022 season in Carter Capps and Joey Wong. Capps will serve as the pitching coach for the Redhawks, while Wong joins Seattle U as the volunteer assistant coach working with the infield.
Before coming to Seattle U, Capps worked in the New York Mets organization, serving as a minor league pitching coach and coordinator based out of Port St. Lucie. He also served as a pitching coach with Driveline.
Capps had a prestigious professional career before joining the coaching ranks, spending six seasons in MLB. Capps pitched for the Seattle Mariners, Miami Marlins, and San Diego Padres in his MLB career, recording a 4.21 ERA across 129 appearances as a reliever. He spent eight years in MLB systems before retiring in 2018.
A native of Kinston, North Carolina, Capps pitched collegiately at Mount Olive College, where he was named the Division II Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-American. Capps went 24-1 in his collegiate career across two seasons, matching the school record with 129 strikeouts as a sophomore. He would throw the first nine-inning no-hitter in Mount Olive history en route to a 1.75 ERA.
Head Coach Donny Harrel was excited about Capps, saying that "we were so very fortunate to find Carter after Greg Goetz retired at the end of the fall season. Coach Capps was instrumental in the Mets organization's pitcher development and his history and pedigree for knowledge to teach young arms on how to be successful on the mound will really allow for our pitchers to continue to grow within our program."
Wong comes to Seattle U after spending two years at his alma mater Oregon State as an assistant. Before that, Wong spent ten years in professional baseball. He played in over 800 games professionally in the Colorado Rockies, Seattle Mariners, and New York Mets organizations after his collegiate career.
"Our family is so grateful to Donny and the rest of the Seattle U staff for the opportunity to join the Redhawk family," said Wong. "We look forward to learning from the amazing staff and helping our dedicated student-athletes become the best versions of themselves on and off the field. Go Redhawks!"
While at Oregon State, Wong helped the Beavers win the 2007 national championship before being drafted in the 24th round by Colorado. In his collegiate career, Wong hit .262 with 31 extra-base hits and 80 RBI. As a freshman, Wong hit .288 as part of the national champion Beavers.
"We are blessed to have Joey as our new infield coach," said Harrel. "He brings in his pro background and knows what it takes to win a national championship, since he was a part of that process at OSU. He is doing a wonderful job helping with our hitters as well and compliments our staff with his knowledge and passion for the game itself."
