SEATTLE  – The Seattle U Redhawks suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 44-60 to the UC San Diego Tritons. Peyton Howard had a career-high 15 points for the Redhawks, who would shoot 28% from the field as a team. The Redhawks are now 1-1 after the first week of the season.

The defense would force 15 turnovers, with Howard, Georgia Kehoe, and Bree Calhoun all recording multiple steals, led by Howard's three. In the fourth quarter alone, the Redhawks would force six UC San Diego turnovers, with the Tritons only making six shots that quarter.

Kehoe had 11 rebounds in the game, including a career-best seven offensive rebounds. That was just a part of a strong offensive rebounding showing, with the Redhawks recording 23 offensive rebounds in all while the Tritons managed only 32 defensive rebounds. Barbara Rangel, Irena Korolenko, and Chinwe Ezeonu all had multiple offensive rebounds: Rangel had four, while both Korolenko and Ezeonu had three.

After a tight first quarter, the Redhawk defense took control in the second, holding UC San Diego to 18% shooting, including a 1-for-10 mark from three-point range. Seattle U would trail by just four at the half but couldn't find an extra gear for the offense in the second half, taking their first loss of the year.
