PHOENIX, Ariz. – Seattle University men's soccer fell at No. 19 Grand Canyon, 1-0, on Saturday night. Akili Kasim made three saves in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opener at GCU Stadium.
The Redhawks gradually gained control of the first half, sloping the field and testing the Lopes' backline. SU fired nine shots and notched seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, but the hosts scored first when a header off of a corner kick was redirected into the back of the Redhawk net.
In the second half, Seattle U continued to challenge the GCU defense in search of an equalizer. SU earned six corner kicks in the second frame, but the hosts kept the Redhawks off the board. In the final minutes, Habib Barry and Declan McGlynn each had terrific chances that were denied by the Lopes' goalkeeper. A Barry shot was pushed over the crossbar by a GCU defender in the last minute to prevent a Redhawk goal. An injury to a GCU player caused the match to be called with 40 seconds remaining.
Kasim finished with three stops in net as SU outshot the hosts, 17-13, and held a 14-7 advantage in corners.
Seattle U hosts a pair of WAC games next weekend, as UNLV and Dixie State visit Championship Field.
