SEATTLE – Following a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Seattle U Men's Basketball's annual O'Brien Open golf tournament returned this year to an energized crowd. The event, in its 18th year, drew in more than 130 participants for a round of golf at the Golf Club at Redmond Ridge, plus a dinner, auction and opportunities to meet and mingle with the Redhawks' coaching staff and players. More than $100,000 was raised with all proceeds benefiting the men's basketball program.
Title sponsors included Copiers Northwest and Olympic Eagle Distribution. Also sponsoring the event were Bill Eisiminger, '67, '73, Goldberg Jones, Meriwether Advisors and Washington Trust Bank. Seattle Fish Guys, Georgetown Brewery and Wing Dome provided food and drink to participants throughout the day.
The O'Brien Open is named after Seattle U Hall of Famers Johnny, '53, and Eddie, '53, O'Brien, who starred in basketball and baseball at the university from 1951-53. The duo led Seattle U to its first NCAA Tournament appearance and Johnny became the first college player to score 1,000 points in a single season.
