MISSOULA, Montana – The Redhawks scored first in every set but came away with the loss, falling 23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 17-25, 10-15 to the Montana Grizzlies Wednesday. Sam Hayward had a new career high with 14 kills, matching Eve Kerschenbaum for the team lead in that category.
Darian Goins and Ezgi Ozkan each had 20+ assists performances: Goins had 27, her second 27-assist match of the year, while Ozkan had 22. Sierra Bartley joined Hayward and Kerschenbaum in double-digit kills with 11. Hayward and Julia Queiroz had two blocks each.
The first three sets were decided by a combined seven points as the two teams traded side-outs back and forth. A 6-1 run by Montana early in the fourth set would prove the difference maker: after Seattle U took a 1-0 lead in that set, Montana outscored it 40-26 the rest of the way to win back-to-back sets and the match.
In all, the Redhawks hit .214 as a team, with Bartley (.360) and Ozkan (.333) both hitting over .300. The Redhawks also had eight aces, matching a season high. Both Goins and Erin Goya had multiple aces for Seattle U.
Seattle U will have three more matches this week as it heads to Spokane for the Gonzaga Invitational. The Redhawks will take on Air Force (11:00 am PT) and Gonzaga (6:00 pm PT) on Friday, then end the weekend against Oklahoma (11:00 am PT) on Saturday.
