SEATTLE – Seattle University women's soccer knocked off Cal Poly, 2-1, in its non-conference finale Sunday afternoon. Bailey Hall scored in the 87th minute to push the Redhawks past the Mustangs at Championship Field.
"I was pleased with the team's second-half performance," said SU Coach Julie Woodward. "We ended the first half very strong and that can be attributed to the players coming in off the bench that provided great energy. I continue to say we are a team with 20-plus starters and it really showed today by the quality of our depth. I thought Jolie had a special performance today and Sydney had an incredible second half."
Cal Poly started stronger of the two sides and was rewarded with the first goal of the day in the 14th minute. The Redhawks (6-2-1) settled in as the half wore on and in the 36th minute, the visitors were called for a handball, setting up a penalty kick. Adam stepped forward and drilled a line drive that beat the Mustang keeper to her right.
In the second half, the Redhawks put together a terrific stretch of play that saw them swing the field in their direction for long periods. SU earned eight corner kicks in the second half and outshot its foe, 12-4, over the final 45 minutes. Sydney Carr repeatedly put the Mustang backline under duress and in the closing moments, the Redhawks' efforts paid off. Carr beat her defender on the left side and crossed in a low ball to Jolie St Louis, who touched a pass to the back post, where Hall came crashing in to tap in the game-winning goal.
On the day, Jessica Berlin notched four saves in net. The Redhawks totaled 10 corner kick tries in the contest.
The Redhawks kick off Western Athletic Conference action on Saturday at California Baptist. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
