SEATTLE – Seattle University women's soccer lost to Washington, 1-0 in double overtime, on Thursday night. Jessica Berlin made seven saves in the WAC/101 Club Cup at Championship Field.
"I thought it was a little bit of an off day for us offensively but was really impressed with our defensive effort especially our back line," said SU Coach Julie Woodward. "It was a very physical and fast-paced game and I thought we played hard and put together some good moments. Games like this give us great preparation for our conference schedule that begins next weekend. I look forward to the team rebounding on Sunday."
Fans from both sides filled the stands, as 896 spectators saw the sides go head-to-head for nearly 110 minutes. Helena Reischling scored the game-winner for the visitors in the 106th minute.
In the first minute, Hallie Bergford got behind the defense and tried to score early. UW turned away the shot, though, and then began to tilt the field in its direction for much of the frame. Neither team found paydirt as the contest went scoreless through 45 minutes.
SU (5-2-1) started the second half looking better, earning a quick corner kick. Sydney Carr worked to provide more chances for the Redhawk attack, but the visitors were on the spot to keep the contest scoreless.
Later in the half, the Redhawks made gains in the UW end and claimed two free kicks. However, the Huskies held on and forced extra time.
SU welcomes Cal Poly on Sunday for its next match. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
