DOUBLING UP
Sam Hayward started the season with a double-double against Idaho State, with ten kills and 17 digs. She joins Eve Kerschenbaum and Amaris Carter as the only active Redhawks to record double-doubles in the first game of a season, wtih Carter doing so in 2020 and Kerschenbaum in 2019. It was the first double-double of Hayward's career.
YOU CAN'T SPELL DARIAN WITHOUT A(SSIST)
In her Redhawks debut, Darian Goins recorded a career-high 27 assists, the most since Ezgi Ozkan's 39 against UTRGV on March 9, 2021. Entering the match, Goins' career high for assists was ten: she recorded 11 in the second set alone against Idaho State.
A BLOCK PARTY
Sophia Bertotti Metoyer set a new career high with five blocks against Idaho State. Bertotti Metoyer has now recorded multiple blocks in nine of her 14 career matches thus far, including two of three this year. It was the fifth five-block game by a Redhawk since the start of the 2020-21 season.
JULIA KILL-ROZ
Against UC Irvine, Julia Queiroz recorded 14 kills, matching her career high set in 2020-21. Queiroz now has three double-digit kill performances in her last four matches, dating back to last season. In that time, Queiroz is averaging 11.25 kills per match.
GO OFF, GOYA
Erin Goya recorded five aces in her first collegiate match to go along with zero errors. That was the most aces in a single match by any Redhawks since November 17, 2018, when Michelle Tarynton had six. Only seven times has a Redhawk recorded more than five aces in a single match, with Kaytlyn Dill and Jelena Vujcin sharing the team record of eight.
WE'RE BACK
The Redhawks return nine of the 11 players to start matches from last year. 464 of Seattle U's 475 kills from the 2021 season are back, as are 402 of 451 assists. Seven different returners recorded 20+ kills last year, with five recording 60+. Three returners (Lauren McCabe, Sophia Bertotti Metoyer, and Ezgi Ozkan) had 20+ blocks last season as well. Seattle U's 2021 leader in kills (Eve Kerschenbaum, 93), assists (Ezgi Ozkan, 358), and blocks (McCabe, 23) are all back.
NEW YEAR, NEW U
Seattle U welcomes four newcomers to the team this year: two freshmen (Katlyn Sipes and Erin Goya) and two graduate transfers (Darian Goins and Sierra Bartley). Sipes comes to Seattle U after leading her high-school conference in digs and earning All-Area honors. Goya played three years at Mid-Pacific High School and excelled in club volleyball with Spike and Serve.
Goins made 11 appearances with LSU over the last two seasons and had a ten-assist game against Mississippi State in 2020. Bartley started 28 matches at Loyola Marymount over four years, making 95 appearances in total.
