ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The season-opener at Idaho State will mark the start of a 12-match road trip to start the year, with Seattle U not playing at the Redhawk Center until September 23, when the Redhawks host Chicago State. It will be Seattle U's longest road trip since 2015, when it started the year with a 15-match road trip, going 10-5.
WE'RE BACK
The Redhawks return nine of the 11 players to start matches from last year. 464 of Seattle U's 475 kills from the 2021 season are back, as are 402 of 451 assists. Seven different returners recorded 20+ kills last year, with five recording 60+. Three returners (Lauren McCabe, Sophia Bertotti Metoyer, and Ezgi Ozkan) had 20+ blocks last season as well. Seattle U's 2021 leader in kills (Eve Kerschenbaum, 93), assists (Ezgi Ozkan, 358), and blocks (McCabe, 23) are all back.
NEW YEAR, NEW U
Seattle U welcomes four newcomers to the team this year: two freshmen (Katlyn Sipes and Erin Goya) and two graduate transfers (Darian Goins and Sierra Bartley). Sipes comes to Seattle U after leading her high-school conference in digs and earning All-Area honors. Goya played three years at Mid-Pacific High School and excelled in club volleyball with Spike and Serve.
Goins made 11 appearances with LSU over the last two seasons and had a ten-assist game against Mississippi State in 2020. Bartley started 28 matches at Loyola Marymount over four years, making 95 appearances in total.
EZGI ASSISTS
Ezgi Ozkan enters the season fifth in Redhawks Division I history in assists, already with over 1,000 in her career. Ozkan finished last season averaging 8.5 assists per set, the third-best mark in the WAC. That mark would have been the fourth-best A/S in Seattle U history if not for the shortened season.
KERSCHENBAUM KILLS
Eve Kerschenbaum finished just short of the 100-kill mark last year, with 93 across 12 matches. Kerschenbaum averaged 2.66 kills per set, the 13th-best mark in the WAC. Only four other players in the WAC had more kills than Kerschenbaum's 93 while playing in fewer than 50 total sets.
A ROAD WARRIOR
In six road matches last year, Amaris Carter racked up 41 kills, good for 2.41 kills per set. Carter had 62% of her kills and 89% of her assists for the year in those six road matches. Two of Carter's three matches with double-digit kills came on the road.
STARTING STRONG
In the first five matches of 2021, Sophia Bertotti Metoyer managed 12 blocks, with multiple blocks in four of those five matches. Bertotti Metoyer would record seven multi-block games on the year, the most of any Redhawk, ahead of Lauren McCabe's five.
