DENVER – Seattle University softball landed five players on the All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) First Team, the league announced on Wednesday. Ally Choate, Stefanie Madrigal, Shi Smith, Cherise Silvan, and Bailey Thompson were named first team, while Carley Nance and Olivia Viggiano earned second team honors.
Choate has had a terrific senior season as the Redhawks' rightfielder. The Yelm, Wash., native hit a team-leading .386 in 44 starts this season, posting 54 hits and 27 runs. Her .456 on-base percentage is tops on the team. Choate ranks third in the WAC in batting average this season and hit .441 in 18 WAC contests, totaling a conference-high 26 hits.
Madrigal went 10-5 with a 2.95 ERA in 25 appearances this season. The native of San Jose, Calif., native pitched six complete games and three shutouts on the year. In WAC play, Madrigal pitched to a 2.78 ERA, third-best in the league, and held opponents to a .247 batting average, good for fifth-lowest in the WAC.
Smith won nine games with a 3.03 ERA in 28 outings. The Gresham, Ore., native struck out a team-leading 110 strikeouts in 108.2 innings this year. Her 7.09 strikeouts per seven innings is best in the WAC. In conference action, Smith recorded a 2.19 ERA, second-best in the league. Her .243 opponent batting average is third-lowest in the WAC.
Silvan put together a stellar season in her fifth year at SU. The leftfielder out of Folsom, Calif., hit .342 in 43 games, pacing the Redhawks with 14 stolen bases. She hit a walk-off home run on senior day at Logan Field, marking her first-ever home run at home. Silvan hit .378 in WAC play.
Thompson was a force in the middle of the SU lineup this season, hitting .346 with a team-high eight homers and 14 doubles. The Tucson, Ariz., native also led the team with 42 RBIs, 13 HBPs, and a .638 slugging percentage. In 18 WAC outings, she slashed .418/.500/.836, ranking in the top four in each category in the league.
Nance paced the WAC with a 2.83 ERA, including a 1.99 ERA in WAC action. In 17 appearances, Nance won seven games. The Maple Valley, Wash., native allowed a .238 batting average in conference play, good for second in the WAC.
Viggiano led the team with seven triples and 29 runs this season. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif., batted .327 and stole 12 bases. Her seven triples rank fourth nationally. Viggiano hit .377 in 18 conference contests.
Choate is a three-time All-WAC First Team selection, while Thompson is a two-time All-WAC First Team pick. Nance was first team in 2019, while Viggiano was second team that same season. Madrigal, Silvan, and Smith are each first-time selections.
The Redhawks open the WAC Tournament tomorrow, as they face GCU at 7 p.m. The 2021 WAC Tournament will be held at Logan Field.
