DENVER – Shi Smith of Seattle University softball has been named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week, for the period ending on May 2. Smith picked up two wins while not allowing a run over nine innings this past weekend.
Smith, a junior from Gresham, Ore., was terrific in two appearances against Dixie State over the weekend. On Friday, she nearly threw a perfect game, giving up a lone hit in the fifth inning of an 8-0 Redhawk win. Smith struck out four in her five innings of work.
The next day, Smith came on in relief in the sixth inning of a 1-1 game. She entered with two runners on and struck out the side. Smith followed with three more scoreless frames, striking out seven Blazers on the day as Seattle U won, 2-1 in nine innings, on senior day.
In WAC play, Smith ranks second in the league in ERA (2.22), third in strikeouts (39), and sixth in opponent batting average (.250). She leads the WAC with two saves.
SU heads to Grand Canyon for its final regular-season series this weekend.
