Seattle U Advances Past Chicago State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seattle U women's tennis started off the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a victory as they defeated Chicago State in the quarterfinals at NM State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. The Redhawks took advantage of strong singles play, earning three of their four total points, to win in a close 4-3 matchup.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seattle U women's tennis started off the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament with a victory as they defeated Chicago State in the quarterfinals at NM State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. The Redhawks took advantage of strong singles play, earning three of their four total points, to win in a close 4-3 matchup.

Junior Hannah Grossman started of the singles dominance as she defeated Katarina Dukic by a score of 6-0, 6-4, while fellow junior Aranza Alvarez Sanabria (6-4, 7-6) earned the victory on court five after narrowly beating Susana Andres in the second set. Clinching the match deciding point was senior Peggy Rooke as she earned a hard fought victory over Sofiya Sedovich by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Junior Martina Asciuto also earned a singles point as she was awarded the victory by default on court six. Senior Hannah Gianan (3-6, 0-6) and Alisa Sabotic (5-7, 2-6) round out the remaining two singles matches as they fell against their respective opponents of Kristina Pukhaeva and Katarina Drazic. 

The Cougars initially came out strong as they won the doubles point. Both matchups were forced to tiebreaker points as Gianan paired with fellow senior Michelle Bader, falling 6-7 against Drazic and Pukhaeva, while junior Jillian Rasmussen teamed up with Rooke (5-7) against Andres and Sedovich.

The Redhawks advance to the semifinals where they will now face off against Grand Canyon at the NM State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
