Redhawks Unable to Keep Up with Vikings

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Seattle U women's tennis finished off its regular season schedule on Friday against Portland State at the Babette Horenstein Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore. Portland State started the match off strong and never let up, winning in a 7-0 sweep.

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Seattle U women's tennis finished off its regular season schedule on Friday against Portland State at the Babette Horenstein Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore. Portland State started the match off strong and never let up, winning in a 7-0 sweep.

This is the second time the Redhawks and Vikings have faced off this season with the latter also winning the previous meeting 6-1 in Seattle.

Senior Peggy Rooke and junior Jillian Rasmussen (6-4) gave the Redhawks a chance to take the doubles point as they earned a hard fought victory against Emily Rees and Lotti Meszaros. Juniors Hannah Grossman and Martina Asciuto (3-6) battled against Ashley Ramirez and Gerda Upeniece, while seniors Hannah Gianan and Michelle Bader (1-6) paired up against Capu Sanoner and Makoto Ohara, earning the Vikings the doubles point.

In singles play, Bader (3-6, 6-4, 2-6) was the closest Redhawk to victory as she forced a third set against Upeniece, while junior Alisa Sabotic (7-6, 3-6, 4-6) started the match off strong against Ohara but was unable to take that momentum into set two and three. Rasmussen (6-7, 4-6) put together two very competitive sets against Ramirez, while Gianan (3-6, 4-6) battled against Meszaros and Ascuito (4-6, 2-6) started off strong against Rees but fell off in set two. Rounding out the singles matches was Rooke (0-6, 3-6) who faced off against Sanoner.

Seattle U's next match will be the first of the Western Athletic Conference tournament as they travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for a matchup with Chicago State at the NM State Tennis Center on Apr. 30 at 8 a.m.
