SEATTLE – Seattle University softball split a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) doubleheader with California Baptist Friday afternoon. Stefanie Madrigal threw a two-hitter in a 2-0 victory after CBU took a 4-3 decision in the opener at Logan Field.

Madrigal was terrific in Friday's nightcap, keeping the Lancers off balance by mixing location and speed. The sophomore threw seven innings and gave up two hits and three walks while striking out a pair. She put down the final 11 batters of the game to claim the win.

SU (17-17, 5-3 WAC) gave Madrigal all the support she would need with two runs in the second inning. Stephanie Merwin singled to lead off and then Grace Dudden walked. With one out, Lily Garcia lofted a single to left center to plate Merwin. Alyson Matriotti followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage. Madrigal handled the rest to even the weekend series.

Madrigal started the first contest of the day as well, and she got out of a bases-loaded jam in top of the first, Ally Choate started the action with an infield hit in the bottom of the inning. Bailey Thompson followed with an opposite-field shot that hit the scoreboard above the rightfield fence for a quick 2-0 lead.

The visitors filled the bases again in the second and this time, they came through with a two-run single to even the score. Shi Smith relieved Madrigal in the third inning, pitching a 1-2-3 frame.

Choate led off with a single and Thompson brought her in with a double off the wall in right center, giving SU a 3-2 advantage.

Smith earned a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless fourth, but the Lancers tied the game again with a run in the fifth. The Redhawks drew two walks and a HBP in the fifth, but CBU got out of danger.

In the top of the sixth, the Lancers loaded the bases, but Smith induced a lineout to right to end the threat. After throwing a 1-2-3 sixth, CBU took the lead with a single and a triple in the seventh.

Thompson singled to start the SU seventh, but the visitors pulled out the opening game of the weekend.

Thompson went 3-3 with a homer, a double, a HBP, and three RBIs. Choate contributed two hits and a pair of runs. Cathcart walked twice. Smith pitched five innings in relief, giving up one earned run and striking out four Lancers.

The Redhawks host the Lancers for a single game tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Logan Field.
