Women's Tennis Drops First Match of Final WAC Cluster

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seattle U women's tennis began its final Western Athletic Conference Cluster on Friday afternoon with a matchup against UTRGV at the New Mexico State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. The Vaqueros started the match with a doubles sweep and carried that momentum into singles play for a 6-1 victory.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seattle U women's tennis began its final Western Athletic Conference Cluster on Friday afternoon with a matchup against UTRGV at the New Mexico State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M. The Vaqueros started the match with a doubles sweep and carried that momentum into singles play, earning a 6-1 victory. 

UTRGV began the match by claiming the doubles point. Juniors Martina Asciuto and Hannah Grossman (6-7) were the closest pairing to victory as they forced the match to a tiebreaker point before falling to Sandra Putz and Ana Platisa. Senior Hannah Gianan and junior Jillian Rasmussen (4-6) teamed up for the first time this season against Isabelle Bahr and Katarina Sasaroga, while seniors Peggy Rooke and Michelle Bader (3-6) faced off against Lea Karren and Valeria Montero. 

In singles play, Seattle U's lone point came from junior Aranza Alvarez Sanabria, earning her third WAC singles victory of the season against Platisa by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 10-3, while Grossman (3-6, 7-6, 5-10) was the next closest Redhawk to victory as she forced Kristyna Mamicova to a third set. Gianan (6-7, 2-6) matched up against Bahr, while Rooke (3-6, 2-6) battled against Karren and junior Alisa Sabotic (1-6, 5-7) started off slow but almost forced a third set against Sasaroga. Rounding out the matches is Rassmussen (1-6, 3-6) who took on Putz on court six. 

"It was a challenging day for us," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "However, the girls are competing better and better each day as we slowly gain more confidence."

Seattle U will end its WAC regular season on Saturday with its match against Tarleton State at the New Mexico State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, N.M., at 8 a.m.
