DENVER – Sydney Carr and Hallie Bergford of Seattle University women's soccer won major awards as part of the 2021 All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) honors, announced by the conference on Monday. Carr earned Offensive Player of the Year and Bergford won Freshman of the Year.
Carr was joined by Michele Adam and Ava Benedetti as First Team All-WAC, while Emily Bunnell and Natalie Dixon claimed Second Team All-WAC. Bergford and Sarah Creighton were picked for the WAC All-Freshman Team and Leahi Manthei was chosen All-WAC Honorable Mention.
Carr, an Orange, Calif., native, leads the nation with 16 goals and 38 points through 17 matches this season. She has three hat tricks this season, including a four-goal, two-assist performance against Chicago State on Mar. 18 at Championship Field. Carr has 17 more points than any other WAC player this season.
Bergford made an immediate impact in her freshman season, appearing in 13 games, making seven starts, and dishing out three assists. She is the first Redhawk to win WAC Freshman of the Year honors. The Olympia, Wash., native is a key presence as a target forward and is crucial on defensive set pieces.
Adam is the leader of the Redhawk backline that allowed just 1.06 goals per game in 17 games this season. She added a goal and an assist offensively. The sophomore out of Morgan Hill, Calif., excels in individual defending, stopping transition opportunities for the opposition.
Benedetti, a sophomore from Happy Valley, Ore., scored seven goals to go with two assists in 16 starts this season. She recorded two goals in consecutive games against New Mexico State earlier this month. Benedetti ranks fifth in the WAC with 16 points.
Bunnell made 15 starts in her first season as a Redhawk, controlling the midfield with her stellar ball-winning skills. The native of Cottage Grove, Minn., tallied three penalty-kick goals to support the offense. Bunnell leads SU with over 83 minutes per game this season.
Dixon was another transfer who claimed a starting spot this season. The Murrieta, Calif., native provided strong service on set pieces and took on a role as a lockdown defender on the outside. The junior logged a goal and three assists in 16 starts.
Creighton, a rookie from Snoqualmie, Wash., posted 15 appearances and four starts this year. She covered plenty of ground in her midfield role, coming through with consistency in her effort.
Manthei leads the WAC with seven assists this season. The senior made 17 appearances, notching a pair of goals. The Gig Harbor, Wash., native put up three assists in a win over Chicago State on Mar. 18 and then added two helpers against NM State on Apr. 3.
Seattle U (11-4-2, 10-2-2 WAC), who split the WAC regular-season crown with Utah Valley, heads to the WAC Tournament this week. SU earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of Tuesday's Grand Canyon-Chicago State contest on Thursday night at GCU.
