LAS VEGAS – Seattle University softball won at UNLV, 4-1, as Ally Choate hit a go-ahead home run to help the Redhawks knock off the Rebels on Friday evening. SU also fell to Utah Valley, 3-0, on the first day of the Boyd Gaming Classic, hosted by UNLV.

Stefanie Madrigal and UNLV's Jenny Bressler locked into a pitcher's duel on Friday night. Madrigal worked around trouble to throw three scoreless frames to start, while Bressler did not allow a hit until the fifth.

The Rebels led, 1-0, in the fifth before Mekenzie Madokoro singled with one out. Brooke Milder advanced Madokoro with a sacrifice bunt. Alyson Matriotti singled in the tying run with a base hit up the middle. In the bottom of the fifth, Madrigal came through with a pair of strikeouts to keep the contest tied.

Choate led off the top of the sixth with a shot to straightaway centerfield, giving the Redhawks a 2-1 edge. SU put two runners on later in the frame, but the hosts got out of the inning without further damage.

UNLV got two runners aboard in the bottom half of the inning and Shi Smith relieved Madrigal with two outs. After a walk, Smith got a looking strikeout to push the game to the seventh.

Madokoro continued her big day with a double in the seventh. Milder followed with a base hit. Olivia Viggiano's RBI groundout brought in Madokoro and then a passed ball allowed Milder to score for a 4-1 advantage.

Smith earned two strikeouts in the seventh to get the save.

Madrigal got the win, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up just one run to go with eight strikeouts. Smith finished the 1.1 innings with three strikeouts and no hits allowed. Madokoro went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Against Utah Valley, Coach Geoff Hirai went to his bench to start the contest, giving many of SU's younger players an opportunity. Madokoro singled twice in the leadoff spot, while Milder and Grace Dudden hit a single apiece. Emma Froemke doubled in the contest.

Kamryn Coleman started in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing just two earned runs.
