Monroy Clinches Victory in WAC Opener

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Seattle U men's tennis opened its 2021 WAC season with a victory as it beat UTRGV 4-3 at the GCU Tennis Facility in Phoenix, Ariz. Senior Emilio Monroy clinched the victory for the Redhawks as he defeated Mateo Schmit 7-5, 6-4 in a hard fought match.

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Seattle U men's tennis opened its 2021 WAC season with a victory as it beat UTRGV 4-3 at the GCU Tennis Facility in Phoenix, Ariz. Senior Emilio Monroy clinched the victory for the Redhawks as he defeated Mateo Schmit 7-5, 6-4 in a hard fought match.

Seattle U did just enough to claim the doubles point. Freshman Julian Worn and Mats Krause were awarded the victory by default and seniors Eli Ogilvy and Lucas Cerbelli (7-6 (7-4)) clinched the doubles point with a victory over Samuel De Felipe Garcia and Carlo Izurieta. Junior Billy Givens-Jensen and Monroy (7-6 (7-5)) were close to pulling off the doubles sweep as they fell in a close match against Te Kani Williams and Mateo Schmit. 

Worn (0-6, 6-1, 7-5) was the next closest Redhawk to a singles victory as he pushed Williams to a third set, while Cerbelli fell to Felipe Garcia in two identical sets of 6-4, 6-4 and Ogilvy (6-4, 6-3) battled against Izurieta. Rounding out the singles matches for Seattle U were Krause and sophomore Lars Schmassmann who were both awared the victory by default.

The Redhawks' next will be on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. as they take on Chicago State at the GCU Tennis Facility.
