FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Seattle U men's tennis wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Wednesday when it faced off against Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., at the NAU Tennis Center. The Redhawks put together some competitive matches but were unable to pull out the victory as the Lumberjacks claimed the 6-1 win on their home courts. Seattle U's lone point on the day came from senior Lucas Cerbelli (6-4, 6-4) as he defeated Eban Straker-Meads for his third singles victory of the season.
The Redhawks started the match strong as they were close to winning the doubles point. Seniors Cerbelli and Eli Ogilvy (7-6) picked up a hard fought victory against Alex Groves and Facundo Tumosa, while fellow senior Emilio Monroy and junior Billy Givens-Jensen (5-7) forced a tiebreaker point against Maciej Ziomber and Daniel Dillon but were unable to earn the victory. Rounding out the doubles matches were freshman Mats Krause and Julian Worn (1-6) who matched up against Dominick Buzonics and Chris Steele.
Worn (2-6, 6-7) was the next closest Redhawk to picking up a singles victory as he almost forced a third set against Steele, while Monroy (5-6, 3-6) started off strong against Buzonics but fell off during the second set. Krause (3-6, 4-6) battled against Groves, while sophomore Lars Schmassmann (2-6, 3-6) faced off against Ziomber and Ogilvy (2-6, 2-6) matched up against Tumosa.
"Our team played well today as they showed great courage and energy," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "This was great preparation for us and we will take what we have learned here into our first match of conference play."
The Redhawks' next match will keep them in Arizona as they head to Phoenix to matchup with UTRGV on Mar. 26 for their first match of conference play.
