Seattle - Seattle U men's tennis hosted its final home match of the season on Friday night as it matched up with Montana State at the Amy Yee Tennis Center. The Redhawks fought hard, winning three singles and one doubles match, however, this was not enough as the Bobcats prevailed in a close 4-3 scoreline.
Seniors Lucas Cerbelli and Eli Ogilvy started off their strong evening by claiming the doubles victory, 6-3, against Brad Buckland and Joaquin Espinoza but the 2-0 Bobcats were able to clinch the doubles point with victories in the other two matches. Freshman Julian Worn and Mats Krause (3-6) teamed up against Nejc Sitar and Marcos Zelver while senior Emilio Monroy and junior Billy Givens-Jensen (2-6) matched up against Daan Van Dijk and Manuel Monteiro.
In singles play, the Redhawks started out with a victory on court one as Ogilvy (6-3, 6-2) clinched his second win of the season over Sitar but they then fell behind once more as Monroy (6-4, 6-3) battled against Buckland. Seattle U then made it 2-2 when Cerbelli (6-4, 6-3) beat Espinoza on court two for his second straight singles victory. Krause (3-6, 6-3, 3-6) fell to Chase Stoner after three sets but Worn (6-1, 2-6, 6-2) was able to tie the match again, defeating Van Dijk on court three. The final matchup went the Bobcats way as sophomore Lars Schmassmann (7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 4-6) pushed Monteiro to a third set but was not able to pull out the victory.
"This was a tough match for us but our players showed great effort," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander.
Seattle U will be back in action Mar. 19 when they travel to Beaverton, Ore., for a matchup with Portland State at the Babette Horenstein Tennis Center, starting at 11 a.m.
