SEATTLE – Sydney Carr scored a hat trick in under 22 minutes as Seattle University women's soccer beat Grand Canyon, 4-2, on Thursday night. The Redhawks have won six in a row and moved their unbeaten streak to seven matches with the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) win at Championship Field.
Carr got the home side rolling quickly on Thursday. She gained possession and shook two defenders to create space. She then launched a shot from over 25 yards out with her left foot, placing the line drive just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
One-hundred seconds later, Carr struck again. She stole the ball near midfield and sprinted straight on towards net. She made a move to her right and then shot back to the far left post to beat the GCU goalkeeper to make it 2-0 in the sixth minute.
In the 22nd minute, SU earned a free kick from just beyond midfield. Michele Adam looped a ball towards the box, where Hallie Bergford leapt and got her head on the ball to move it closer to goal, where Carr reached out with her right foot and found the back of the net for the hat trick.
Carr's hat trick is the first by a Redhawk since Leahi Manthei scored four goals at Idaho on September 6, 2017.
Ava Benedetti joined the fun in the 26th minute, driving ahead to take over possession at midfield and then hustling forward before dribbling left and shooting with her left foot to score from 20 yards out for a 4-0 margin.
SU's four first-half goals are its most since October 4, 2017, when it put up four in the second half of a 6-1 win at Chicago State.
GCU scored late in the first half and then again midway through the second to pull closer, but SU held off any further damage to claim the home victory.
The Redhawks outshot GCU, 16-10, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Madison Waguespack made two saves in net.
The teams will meet again on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
