SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball battled to the buzzer with unbeaten California Baptist as the Lancers claimed a 66-64 decision on Friday afternoon. Three Redhawks scored in double figures in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game at the Redhawk Center.

CBU held a slim margin for much of the day and led, 51-45, through three periods. The lead went back up to nine early in the fourth, but a pull-up jumper by McKenzi Williams and two Bree Calhoun free throws closed the gap. Calhoun scored inside to make it 54-51 with 7:07 to go. CBU scored next, but Hailey Vice-Neat hit a jumper. After another Lancer hoop, Williams found Courtney Murphy for a wing three-pointer to cut the margin to two at the 5:15 mark.

The visitors hit two foul shots before Kehoe finished a putback to get SU within 60-58. Down four in the final minute, Williams created space and nailed a three, making it 62-61 with 26 seconds remaining. CBU made four free throws as the Redhawks were unable to get a tying shot.

Calhoun led with 16 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Kehoe put up 11 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals, while Williams totaled 11 points and six boards. Vice-Neat came off the bench to grab a career-high 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. She added three blocks and three steals. Chinwe Ezeonu tallied 11 boards.

SU forced 19 turnovers and held the high-scoring CBU attack to 35 percent shooting from the field.

The Lancers came to town undefeated and showed why with their ball movement and sharpshooting. SU looked to take control early as Calhoun sank a stepback jumper for a 2-0 lead. Calhoun assisted on a Peyton Howard three-pointer from the top of the key. A Howard jumper and a Georgia Kehoe layup made it 9-4 Redhawks after 3:10 of action. The visitors answered with a 9-0 burst before Calhoun found Kehoe for a lay-in. Ezeonu finished through contact late in the frame as SU got within 19-13 after a period.

The Lancers extended their lead to 12 early in the second quarter, but SU battled back. Kehoe scored in the paint and Calhoun converted a pair of free throws. Williams nailed a trey and later, Vice-Neat scored while being fouled to pull within 10 at the 2:59 mark. Calhoun set up a Murphy triple and then Kehoe split two foul shots as the hosts made it a six-point difference. CBU scored last, though, and led 34-26 at halftime.

The Lancers jumped out to an 11-point lead early in the third, but Calhoun scored and then Howard sank a three to get within 39-33. Calhoun followed with a steal and a layup, and after a stop, Calhoun hit another jumper. The 9-0 run made it 39-37 with 6:57 remaining in the quarter. CBU finally came up with a three, but Murphy sank a corner three-ball on the other end. The deficit went back up to nine, but a late Williams triple made it 51-45 at the end of the third.

The teams meet again tomorrow. Tip-off for senior day at the Redhawk Center is scheduled for 3 p.m. Leilani Peat and Makenna Schoenhofer will be recognized before the contest.
