SEATTLE – Seattle University women's soccer battled with No. 10 Washington State on Sunday afternoon, but the Cougars came away with a 2-1 decision. Leahi Manthei scored for the Redhawks in the 2021 opener at Championship Field.
In the first half, much of the action took place in the midfield, with both teams looking to control possession. In the 17th minute, the Cougars struck for a goal and a 1-0 edge. Later in the frame, SU looked better, pressing forward and earning free-kick tries. Each team attempted three shots as the visitors entered halftime with a one-goal margin.
The Redhawks quickly leveled the score in the second half. Natalie Dixon's throw-in went to Hallie Bergford, who touched the ball ahead to Sydney Carr. Carr drew the defense on the right side and then crossed to Manthei, who dribbled back right, finding space to launch a tremendous shot over the fingertips of the Cougar goalkeeper and make it 1-all less than a minute into the second period.
The visitors went on to regain the lead later in the half. SU put together several more chances late in the contest, but the Cougars held on in the 2021 premier.
Seattle U outshot WSU, 9-6, in the game.
The Redhawks will play at Washington on Friday, Feb. 12, in their next match.
