PORTLAND, Ore. - Seattle U men's tennis team wrapped up their weekend trip to Oregon with a matchup against the 2-1 Portland Pilots at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots came out strong and didn't let up, winning in a 7-0 sweep on their home courts. The loss drops the Redhawks to 1-4 on the season.
"This was a tough match for our men's team today," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "I know they all competed extremely hard and this will just push us harder to achieve our goals. We will keep improving everyday to help prepare ourselves for the conference tournament."
Portland opened the day by claiming the doubles point. Senior Lucas Cerbelli paired up with junior Billy Givens-Jensen against Issa Yoshida and Elftherios Neos, falling in a close 4-6 matchup, while seniors Eli Ogilvy and Emilio Monroy suffered the same result against Leo Hibi and Nicklas Oberg. Freshman Mats Krause and Julian Worn's (3-6) three game win streak came to an end with a defeat to Sema Pankin and Nikolas Tvedt.
In singles play, Ogilvy put together two competitive sets against Pankin, finishing 3-6, 4-6, while Givens-Jensen (3-6, 3-0) started off strong but fell short to opponent Hibi. Sophomore Lars Schmassmann (1-6, 3-6) matched up against Tvedt, while Krause and Worn suffered identical results, 3-6, 1-6, to Oberg and Yoshida. Rounding out the matches for the Redhawks is Cerbelli (2-6, 1-6) who faced off against Neos.
The Redhawks next scheduled event has them traveling to Lewiston, Idaho to face off against Idaho on Mar.5, Boise State on Mar. 6 and Lewis-Clark State on Mar. 7. All matches are set to take place at the LCSC Tennis Center.
