SEATTLE – Seattle University women's soccer beat California Baptist, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. Sydney Carr scored and Madison Waguespack made five saves as the Redhawks remained unbeaten in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play.
The first half was played at postseason intensity, as both teams worked to create chances and make plays in open field. Madison Waguespack made a kick save on a Lancer breakaway chance in the opening minutes. In the 18th minute, SU drew a free kick just outside the box. Carr perfectly placed a low ball around the wall and to the far lower left corner, where Emily Bunnell had her defender boxed out. The ball rolled right between Bunnell's legs and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The action went end-to-end for much of the period, with 16 fouls called. SU put together several solid opportunities with good passing, but CBU stayed within a goal as the half came to a close.
In the second half, the physical play continued as each side looked for a goal. Waguespack was key again, making a diving save in the 61st minute to keep the visitors off the board. The Redhawks did enough to keep the Lancers at bay and SU pulled out the one-goal decision.
The Redhawks travel to Dixie State for a pair of WAC matches next weekend.
