SEATTLE - Seattle U men's tennis hosted their 2021 home opener Saturday night against Idaho at the Amy Yee Tennis Center. Freshman Mats Krause was the star of the show for the Redhawks, winning both his singles and doubles matchup, however, this wasn't enough as the Vandals triumphed in a 5-2 victory. The loss drops the Redhawks to 0-3 on the season.
Seattle U started the match strong by claiming the doubles point. Freshman Mats Krause and Julian Worn (6-1) earned their second doubles win of the season against Adam Taylor and Vivek Ramesh, while seniors Eli Ogilvy and Emilio Monroy earned a hard-fought 6-3 over Francisco Bascon and Matteo Masala. Senior Lucas Cerbelli and junior Billy Givens-Jensen were close to pulling off the sweep but fell in a close 5-7 final against Althaf Dhaifullah and Bruno Casino.
Krause continued his strong performance into singles play as he defeated Ramesh in a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) win, while Ogilvy was close to pushing Dhaifullah to a third set but fell short in 3-6, 6-7 (5-7) final. Monroy (2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6) and Worn (6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 2-6) both pushed their opponents, Casino and Masala, to a third set but were unable to pull out the victory. Rounding out the matches for the Redhawks are Givens-Jensen (1-6, 2-6) and Cerbelli (3-6, 2-6) who matched up against Alejandro Salvador Civera and Bascon respectively.
"I thought we showed a lot of character and fight on the court tonight," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "Unfortunately, we came up short, however, I am happy to see them fight and show that desire to win. This is a step in the right direction for us and we are looking forward to matching up with them again next month."
The Redhawks will travel to Oregon next weekend to take on George Fox at 5 p.m. on Friday and Portland at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.
