SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball beat UTRGV, 71-64, in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Bree Calhoun tallied a double-double for the second straight day and carried the Redhawks in the extra session of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at the Redhawk Center.
Seattle U (11-9, 6-4 WAC) led by 23 at halftime, thanks to terrific defense. However, UTRGV swung the game in the second half and forced overtime. In OT, Calhoun scored on SU's first trip. After a Vaquero free throw, Caloun drove and found Georgia Kehoe for a lay-in. Calhoun followed with a driving bucket for a 67-62 lead with 2:04 left. The Redhawks made a stop and Calhoun again drove and dropped the ball off for a Kehoe lay-in. Two McKenzi Williams free throws sealed the game in the Redhawks' favor.
Calhoun finished with 20 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals in 42 minutes. Williams scored 21 points to go with four assists. Kehoe totaled 12 points, six boards, and four blocked shots. Makenna Schoenhofer added eight points and three rebounds off the bench.
The contest marked the fourth straight season that a game between the two programs has gone to overtime.
Both teams came out with high intensity after Friday's competitive affair. UTRGV scored the first seven points of the game, but SU quickly settled and gained the lead with a 14-0 outburst. McKenzi Williams hit a three and drove for a layup. Calhoun went coast-to-coast for a layup to tie it at 7 with 5:23 remaining. A Calhoun trey put the Redhawks ahead and then Williams scored again. Makenna Schoenhofer capped the run with a bucket for a 14-7 margin with 2:10 to go in the period. After the visitors scored, Peyton Howard finished inside for a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes.
In the second period, the Redhawks put together a defensive clinic, holding the Vaqueros to four points and 0-12 field-goal shooting. Calhoun found Georgia Kehoe for a layup to open scoring and after forcing a five-second violation and a Williams block, Schoenhofer drained a triple with 6:09 showing on the clock. A Williams takeaway and lay-in stretched the margin before a Kehoe basket made it 25-10. The Vaqueros finally hit a free throw, but Calhoun drove and scored on the other end. Williams sank a pair of foul shots and later Calhoun stole the ball and set up a Williams hoop. Another Calhoun steal and score made it 33-14. In the final minute, Williams forced another turnover and then scored. Calhoun made a steal and then was fouled, making both free throws for a 37-14 halftime difference. In the final 17 minutes of the first half, SU held the visitors to 1-22 field-goal shooting and 14 turnovers.

Calhoun hit a three and Howard sank three foul shots, but the Vaqueros chipped away and got within eight with 2:23 left in the third. Kehoe set up a Williams and-one and then Kehoe blocked a shot and Calhoun found Schoenhofer open for three and a 53-41 lead after three quarters.
A Kehoe layup made it a 14-point spread early in the fourth, but the Vaqueros pulled within in midway through the frame. A Hailey Vice-Neat triple made it 60-50, but the visitors rallied with 11 straight points to take the lead with 51 seconds to play.
