SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball fell, 84-74, to UTRGV Friday afternoon. Bree Calhoun led with 23 points and 10 assists in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contest at the Redhawk Center.

McKenzi Williams hit a jumper for the game's first points. After a Vaquero hoop, Chinwe Ezeonu scored on a putback. Williams then sank two free throws. UTRGV scored next, but Irena Korolenko swished a trey on the other end. UTRGV answered with 10 straight points as it began to hit from long range. Georgia Kehoe scored late in the frame, but the visitors closed well and held a 22-12 margin after a period.

Calhoun drove and finished in the lane to get within eight early in the second quarter. UTRGV expanded the lead back to 14 before Maddy Phillips made her impact on the contest. The sophomore sank a three with 7:40 to go in the half. She followed with a jumper, and after a Korolenko bucket, Phillips nailed another triple to make it 31-24 at the 5:03 mark.

Williams scored and Calhoun set up a Ramona Jagger layup as SU pulled within 34-30 late in the half. Korolenko and Williams both scored, but the visitors maintained a 43-34 difference at halftime.

In the second half, Kehoe split two foul shots and Calhoun made a jumper. A Calhoun trey made it 45-40, but UTRGV replied with a three of its own. Williams' three-ball kept the margin at five, but the visitors again had the solution and expanded the difference to 14 as the quarter rolled on. Kehoe made a putback, Korolenko swished a three, and Kehoe finished a Calhoun dish as the Redhawks got within 60-54 with 1:35 remaining. The Vaqueros hit another late three to gain a 65-55 lead heading into the fourth.

Calhoun worked tirelessly to keep SU (10-9, 5-4 WAC) in the game, but UTRGV continued to hit shots and held its margin in the final frame. Calhoun put up 14 points in the fourth to tie her career high with 23 on the day.

Calhoun tallied 23 points to go with a career-high 10 assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Williams added 14 points and four boards, while Korolenko had 12 points and four rebounds. UTRGV made 15-32 three-pointers in the game.

The teams face off again tomorrow. Tip time is 3 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
