SPOKANE, Wash. - Seattle U men's tennis opened the 2021 season Saturday with a trip to Spokane to take on the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Stevens Center. The Bulldogs started off strong and never let up, winning in a decisive 7-0 sweep on their home courts.
"We had a positive start with how close the doubles matches were," said Head Coach Kristina Hollander. "We struggled maintaining our energy throughout the singles matches, however we are grateful we got the opportunity to compete."
Gonzaga opened the day by claiming the doubles point. Seattle U freshman Mats Krause and Julian Worn put together the best doubles performance of the day, losing narrowly 6-7 (7-9) against Pablo Gomez Galvan and Matthew Perkins. Senior Emilio Monroy paired up with junior Billy Givens-Jensen against Leon Roider and Oliver Andersson, falling 4-6, while seniors Eli Ogilvy and Lucas Cerbelli (3-6) battled against Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja.
In singles play, Monroy (1-6, 5-7) put together a strong second set against Roider after a slow start. Ogilvy put together two very competitive sets against Hollingworth, finishing 2-6, 4-6, while Worn (4-6, 0-6) started off well but fell short to opponent Andersson. Krause (1-6, 0-6) matched up against Theo McDonald, while sophomore Lars Schmassmann and senior Lucas Cerbelli suffered identical results, 1-6, 1-6, to Gomez Galvan and Trkulja respectively.
The Redhawks' next match will be on Monday against Washington at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle at 4 p.m.
