SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball led, 22-2, in the first quarter and came away with its fifth straight win, 82-59, over Northwest on Saturday afternoon. Four Redhawks scored in double figures in the non-conference contest at the Redhawk Center.
SU (9-7) started the game with purpose, looking to put away the Eagles early. McKenzi Williams blocked a shot on the first possession of the game and then Chinwe Ezeonu scored on the Redhawks' first trip. After two NU free throws, Seattle U broke out on a 20-0 run to take control. Peyton Howard drove and scored and Williams assisted on an Irena Korolenko corner three-pointer. Korolenko swished from the same spot 40 seconds later. Williams scored inside twice and then stole the ball and cruised in for a third lay-in and a 16-2 advantage. Williams then found Korolenko open in the right corner and the freshman nailed her third triple of the period. With 3:15 left, Erin Tarasow sank a corner three-ball to make it 22-2.
Northwest settled a bit after that, but Georgia Kehoe, Makenna Schoenhofer, and Bree Calhoun each scored in the paint as SU grabbed a 28-14 lead at the end of the first. The hosts shot 12-16 from the field, including 4-5 from downtown, in the period.
Kehoe scored to start the second quarter, and after an Eagle hoop, Kehoe made another layup for a 32-16 margin. Williams worked to finish a possession with a basket after three offensive rebounds. Kehoe later put in two more layups, but the visitors hit shots and hung around as the half continued. An Ezeonu bucket gave SU a 41-27 lead with 1:40 to go. Calhoun split two foul shots and Korolenko stole the inbounds and banked in a 35-footer just before the buzzer as the Redhawks went up, 45-30, at halftime.
In the third period, Williams scored twice early as the visitors stayed within 15 points. Calhoun made her impact known, making a layup and setting up a Kehoe hoop. She scored inside again and then made a steal that resulted in a Kehoe putback at the horn for a 61-44 difference.
Williams and Calhoun both scored to regain a 20-point barrier in the fourth. After an Eagle bucket, Calhoun scored and then assisted on a Hailey Vice-Neat trey with 7:13 remaining. Korolenko nailed a fifth three-ball at the 6:35 mark, giving her five triples on the day.
As a team, SU outrebounded the Eagles, 42-28, and held a 24-5 advantage in fast-break points.
Kehoe put up 16 points on 8-12 shooting to go with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Williams shot 7-10 on her way to 16 points and two steals. Korolenko made 5-9 three-point tries for a career-high 15 points. Calhoun finished with 14 points on 6-9 accuracy, along with seven assists, five boards, and five steals.
The Redhawks hit the road and return to WAC play next weekend. They will play New Mexico State on Feb. 12-13 in El Paso, Texas.
