SEATTLE – After honoring their three graduating seniors in a short pre-match ceremony at the Amy Yee Tennis Center, Seattle U men's tennis took to the courts on Sunday afternoon with a vengeance, hoping to come away with a strong win against Bellevue College. In the end, they did just that, sweeping the Bulldogs 7-0.
Doubles play started off with a solid 6-2 victory in the no. 2 slot over Bellevue's Francis Viloria and Alex Huynh, courtesy of Redhawk juniors Emilio Monroy and Colton Weeldreyer, Senior Adrian Alvarez Sanabria and freshman Lars Schmassmann were tied up with the Bulldogs' Kenny Nguyen and Nick Ngo in the no. 3 match, but put together a fantastic finish to win, 6-4. Finally, a drawn-out battle featuring the Seattle U duo of seniors Trenton Nield and Alex Chan saw the two seniors emerge victorious, 7-5, over opponents Stefano Wirawan and Nick Berni.
In singles play, Chan made short work of Bellevue's Tyler Gettmann, posting sets of 6-1, 6-0 for the victory. Schmassmann posted a similar score of 6-0, 6-1 against Ngo, while Alvarez Sanabria finished at 6-2, 6-0 over Huynh. In the no. 3 singles match, Monroy routed Bernie 6-1, 6-0 as classmate Weeldreyer won 6-0, 6-1 over Viloria in the no. 2 match. Nield, pitted against Wirawan in a no. 1 bout for the ages, eventually triumphed 6-2, 7-5 to complete the sweep.
Next up, the Redhawks look to jump-start a winning streak against UC Riverside on Mar. 21 in Riverside, Calif. The first matches will begin at 4:00 p.m. PT.
