BERKELEY, Calif. – Seattle University men's basketball led California for more than 35 minutes Tuesday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. But a late cold spell helped the home team piece together a 10-0 run down the stretch to send the Redhawks to a 70-65 defeat.
Riley Grigsby led all scorers with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds. Darrion Trammell finished with 15 points, five rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Emeka Udenyi added 14 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. The Redhawks also got seven points apiece from Vas Pandža and Kobe Williamson.
"We got great performances from Emeka, Darrion and Riley today," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "We have a lot to build on from this. We're getting great lead guard play, great post play from Emeka and JP, great play from the blur position with Riley. When we get some shooters to step up, this team will really come together."
Ryan Betley paced Cal (5-4) with 17 points. Joel Brown added 12 points and Kuany Kuany chipped in 11.
The Redhawks (5-5) won the tip and Udenyi immediately found the bottom of the bucket for a quick 2-0 lead. Williamson drained a three and Udenyi would add the next four points as Seattle U jumped out to a 9-3 advantage over the Bears.
Seven straight points by Trammell had the Redhawks open up a a 22-11 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first half. Seattle U continued to fend off every Cal surge in the frame, either with big buckets or defensive stops.
Shooting 47 percent in the half and committing just two turnovers, the Redhawks carried a 37-33 lead into the break.
The trend continued into the second and a pair of Pandža free throws at the 11:26 mark had the Redhawks ahead, 53-47. But an 8-0 Cal run, kindling a pair of triples from Ryan Betley, pushed the Bears into the lead for the first time in game, 55-53, with 7:17 to play.
Pandža knocked down a triple to swipe the lead briefly back. A Brown bucket put Cal up one before Grigsby responded with a three of his own for a 59-57 Seattle U lead.
Brown would answer the call twice more for the Bears, knocking down back-to-back threes to jumpstart a 10-0 run that put Cal in the drivers' seat.
"This was a really good college basketball game," said Hayford. "It came right down to the last four minutes and you have to credit Joel Brown. His two threes were clutch and at the end of the shot clock after we played really good defense. He made the two winning plays that really were the difference in this game."
Grigsby ended a five-minute scoreless spell for the Redhawks with a layup with 21 seconds remaining, but the damage was done. Three-of-four made free throws by the Bears sealed the game.
The Redhawks return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 30, hosting the University of Portland to close out non-conference play and 2020. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is set for 6 p.m. The game millstream live on the WAC Digital Network.
