SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball improved to 2-0 at home and 5-4 on the season as another solid defensive performance led the Redhawks to a 78-54 win over College of Idaho Thursday night at the Redhawk Center.
Four players scored in double figures for the second time this season, including Darrion Trammell with 16 points to go along with six assists. Riley Grigsby had 15 points, including 13 in the first half, Vas Pandža had a season-high 13 and Emeka Udenyi added 10 points and 10 boards for his first double-double of the year.
It was the Redhawks' defensive however, that starred in the victory as Seattle U allowed just 18 field goals, including holding the Yotes to just 8-of-29 from the field in the second half.
"College of Idaho is a well coached team and a top NAIA program," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "Our defense was outstanding and has shown a lot of growth. But to score 78 points and still be shooting the ball so poorly, our guys need to get in the gym and really take it on themselves with pride because we're a lot better shooters than we are showing."
The teams battled back and forth in the early goings and a three by Grigsby gave Seattle U its first lead of the game, 13-12 with 12:46 in the first. Five straight points by Williamson would later make it 20-15 with 9:23 on the clock.
Holding onto a slim 26-23 advantage with 4:10 to play in the first, Seattle U went on 10-0 run to create separation and carry a 36-26 lead into the break.
After holding the Yotes to just 10 first-half field goals, the Redhawks really got into a defensive groove in the second half, holding the visitor to under 28 percent from the field while also forcing seven turnovers and blocking three shots.
A 9-1 spurt to open the second half quickly opened up an 18-point advantage, 45-27, and the Redhawks would lead by as many as 26 before closing out the 24-point victory.
Seattle U finished the night shooting 44.4 percent from the field, but again struggled from the perimeter, hitting just 5-of-26 (19 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Redhawks head back out on the road for a newly-added game at Pac-12 member California on Dec. 22. Tip off from Haas Pavilion is set for 2 p.m. The game will air live on the Pac-12 Network.
