SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball fell behind early and could not quite catch up as Montana came away with a 61-55 decision on Thursday afternoon at the Redhawk Center. Bree Calhoun led Seattle U with a career-high 23 points.

Down by 11 at the half, Seattle U looked to Calhoun to ignite a rally. The junior guard answered. After each side scored once, Calhoun found space to hit a jumper in the lane. Montana scored next, but Calhoun came back with a layup and a three-point play to get within 35-29.

The Grizzles scored again, but Calhoun replied with a three-pointer and then a lay-in to make it a 37-34 difference with 5:18 left in the period. Calhoun's 12-point outburst opened the door for an SU comeback. Buckets by Courtney Murphy and McKenzi Williams supported the offense before Calhoun scored again. Montana had the closing kick, however, scoring late for a 51-41 lead through three frames.

A pair of Williams free throws made it 53-45 early in the fourth and then Makenna Schoenhofer assisted on a Murphy trey to get SU within five with just over five minutes remaining. The visitors tried to close the door, but the Redhawks battled, as jumpers by Murphy and Calhoun made it a two-possession game late. Montana did just enough to hold off a rally and pulled out the contest.

Calhoun finished with a career-high 23 points on 10-19 shooting. She added four rebounds and three steals. Williams recorded 13 points and five rebounds, while Murphy and Kehoe combined for 17 points. The defense forced 25 Griz turnovers, but could not take enough advantage in the end.

Montana got the better of the early action, moving the ball and using its size to control the glass. Georgia Kehoe scored six points to keep the SU offense afloat, but the visitors grabbed a 22-9 advantage after a period.

The Redhawks continued to look sluggish offensively in the second frame, but their defense came alive to contain the Grizzlies. SU held Montana to 3-16 field-goal shooting in the second quarter, also hounding the visitors into four turnovers. A spinning finish from Chinwe Ezeonu and a transition layup by Calhoun got the SU attack moving. Calhoun followed with a trey and then Williams drove for two hoops late in the half. Montana still managed a 31-20 halftime margin, though.

The Redhawks travel for their last two games of 2020, as they play at Eastern Washington on Saturday and then at Idaho on Monday.
