SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball rode an outstanding second-half defensive effort to roll to an 89-40 win over Northwest University Sunday night at the Redhawk Center.
The game, Seattle U's eighth of the season, was the first at home and moved the Redhawks to an even 4-4 on the year.
The two sides were even through much of the first half as both hit better than 50 percent for much of the frame. Northwest would take a 21-20 lead on a Lee Pa'Treon three with 6:48 on the clock.
Seattle U reclaimed the lead on a Jared Pearre jumper. Pearre's bucket would kickstart a 9-0 run that put the Redhawks in front 29-21 with 4:19 remaining in the half. Holding the Eagles without a field goal in the final 6:48, Seattle U would carry a 34-25 advantage into the break.
"A lot of respect and credit to Northwest University," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "They're working hard to let their guys play basketball which means all of their games are against DI teams. They came out with a great gameplay and offensive rebounded very well."
The second half was all Redhawks as the lead ballooned to 17, 47-30, less than four minutes. Seattle U's defense held Northwest to just 6-of-34 from the field in the second half.
"We really played the kind of defense I know we can play in the second half," said Hayford. "We shot well from the foul line, we executed and got high percentage shots, but we can shoot the ball a whole lot better than we did."
Utilizing their size advantage inside, the Redhawks held a 48-12 advantage in points in the paint, while also scoring 34 points off of 23 Northwest turnovers. Seattle U finished the night shooting better than 57 percent from the field, including 63.3 percent in the second half.
Riley Grigsby led all players with 27 points and eight rebounds. Trammell added 15 points and six assists while Pearre had a season-high 12 points off the bench.
The non-conference slate continues on Thursday, Dec. 17 as the Redhawks welcome College of Idaho to the Redhawk Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Seattle U will then head back out on the road for a newly-added game at Pac-12 member California on Dec. 22.
