SEATTLE – Seattle University women's basketball used a terrific shooting night to hammer Northwest, 106-39, on Thursday night. Thirteen Redhawks scored as SU set a Division I-program record for points and tied a D1 program record with 15 three-pointers in the non-conference runaway at the Redhawk Center.
The SU offense was dynamic from the start, exploding for 32 points on 13-17 field-goal shooting, including 5-7 from downtown, in the first period. The quick hands of Bree Calhoun and McKenzi Williams forced the Northwest attack into difficult spots and initiated the Redhawk transition game. Calhoun made a steal and cruised for SU's first basket of the night. Georgia Kehoe scored inside, and after a Northwest hoop, Calhoun set up Courtney Murphy for a layup.
Williams assisted on a Murphy trey and then Calhoun drove and scored to make it 11-5 with 7:17 remaining. Williams set up another Murphy bucket and then Williams swished a three of her own. A Chinwe Ezeonu lay-in stretched the margin to nine midway through the frame. Hailey Vice-Neat sank a three-pointer as the barrage continued. Layups by Williams and Makenna Schoenhofer expanded the lead and then Schoenhofer and Murphy swished late triples for a 32-13 advantage after a quarter.
In the second period, SU poured it on, as Murphy hit a three and then Vice-Neat nailed a trey. Ezeonu and Maddy Phillips both scored in the lane and Williams made a triple. Madison DuBois followed with a three-ball as the lead ballooned to 49-18. A pair of Peyton Howard layups made it 55-21 and then Murphy beat the buzzer with another trey for a 38-point difference at halftime.
The second half gave SU plenty of opportunity to play its bench. Erin Tarasow sank two three-pointers, while Irena Korolenko and Hannah Martin also splashed triples.
The previous D1 mark for an SU side was 100 points vs. Oregon on Dec. 4, 2013. Seattle U also hit 15 three-pointers against Portland on Jan. 3, 2010. The 39 points allowed are the fewest given up by a Redhawk team since Nov. 20, 2015 (38 vs. Evergreen State). SU's 29 assists also tied a D1-program record, set in the game against Oregon in 2013.
Murphy scored 16 points, making four treys. Williams tallied nine points, eight rebounds, and four rebounds, while Calhoun contributed seven points, nine assists, and five steals. Phillips put up a career-high 14 points and Schoenhofer tallied 11 points for her personal best. Kehoe posted 10 points, while DuBois added seven.
Seattle U welcomes Montana on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
