LAS VEGAS — Playing their second game in as many days, Seattle University men's basketball dropped a 76-65 decision to CSUN Monday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Redhawks (3-1) fell behind early as the Matadors (2-1) opened the game with an Alex Merkviladze three and never trailed on the day. Seattle U managed just 35 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including 0-of-9 from deep.
Darrion Trammell provided a much-needed spark off the bench, as a personal 9-2 run late in the first half brought the Redhawks within four, 30-26, with 2:57 on the clock. But the Matadors responded with a 9-2 spurt to close out the frame and carry a 39-28 advantage into the break.
Seattle U put together another solid run early in the second frame, this time on 11 straight points from Riley Grigsby, to pull within five, 47-42 with just over 14 minutes to play. But the Redhawks could never quite get over the hump, unable to get closer than eight down the stretch as CSUN held on for the win.
"We did not respond well to our first opportunity to play back-to-back games," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "Northridge was the more aggressive team and basketball will always reward that. The season is young and we will use this to get better."
Trammell led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on 8-of-17 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Grigsby added 18 points and eight rebounds while Aaron Nettles finished with 10 points. Kobe Williamson had a game-high nine rebounds as the two teams finished even on the boards, 37-37.
After going without a three for the entire first half, Seattle U hit seven from deep in the second frame, but finished the game shooting just 24 percent from beyond the arc and 37 percent from the field.
The Redhawks' season opening road swing continues on Thursday, Dec. 3 as they head to Los Angeles to take on UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Tip off is set for 5 p.m.
