PORTLAND, Ore. – Seattle University women's basketball hung with Portland for three quarters on Sunday afternoon, but the Pilots had the closing kick to come away with an 80-68 decision. Four Redhawks scored in double figures in the non-conference contest at the Chiles Center.

"Portland is a really good team and they'll be tough in the WCC," said Coach Suzy Barcomb. "Bree played a nice game in both full-court and half-court sets today. We were able to turn them over and score out of it and we were much better on the glass today."

The Pilots got the better of the early action, but SU quickly got into the game. Down 9-2, Bree Calhoun found Courtney Murphy for a three-pointer. A Hailey Vice-Neat jumper trimmed the margin further and after a UP hoop, McKenzi Williams scored and then picked off a pass and went in for a tying layup to make it 11-all with 4:17 left. Calhoun set up a Maddy Phillips baseline jumper to put Seattle U ahead and then Calhoun scored in the lane herself to stretch the lead. The home team scored last to get within 15-13 after a period.

The second frame was similar, with Portland's press finding success at times, but the Redhawks worked to find open looks and stay close. Georgia Kehoe, making the first start of her career, made a steal and scored and then took a charge on the other end. The Pilots scored next, but Peyton Howard's layup cut into the deficit midway through the quarter. A Phillips jumper made it a one-point difference before Chinwe Ezeonu briefly took over the game. The Seattle native displayed an array of face-up moves to score on three straight possessions and give SU a 27-24 edge. Two late UP treys allowed the Pilots to grab a 30-27 halftime lead, though.

In the third, UP expanded its margin early, but layups by Murphy and Kehoe kept SU close. Williams swished a three from the left wing and then sank from the same spot 30 seconds late to make it 41-37. Two Calhoun jumpers tied the game at 45 with 3:21 showing on the clock. Murphy scored again and Calhoun split two foul shots, but Portland had the final points again, taking a 53-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kehoe made a layup to start fourth-period scoring, but the Redhawks' offense went cold, while UP's attack got stronger. A UP trey with 6:11 left gave the hosts a 64-52 advantage as the Pilots grabbed control.

Williams led with 18 points on 5-9 field-goal shooting to go with five steals. Calhoun posted 13 points, six assists and three steals. Kehoe totaled 11 points and four rebounds, while Murphy tallied 10 points. Ezeonu claimed eight points and 10 boards off the bench.

Seattle U hosts Northwest University on Thursday, Dec. 10. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
