EUGENE, Ore. – Seattle University women's basketball fell at No. 10 Oregon, 116-51 on Saturday afternoon. McKenzi Williams led SU with 20 points, tying her career high for a second straight game, in the non-conference contest at Matthew Knight Arena.
"I continue to be impressed with the play of Kenzi and Maddy," said Coach Suzy Barcomb. "Our newcomers have grown each game and I think we could have something special about this group. How could you not be impressed with the skill set of both (Sedona) Prince and (Taylor) Mikesell? Oregon has depth at every position. I look forward to watching Pac-12 basketball as a fan."
The Ducks showed why they're one of the top programs in college basketball, getting up and down the floor and scoring in the paint and from beyond the arc. Maddy Phillips and Chinwe Ezeonu scored early buckets for SU and then Ramona Jagger's hand-off set up a Bree Calhoun layup to make it 15-6 with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter.
Hoops by Peyton Howard, Ezeonu, and Williams kept the Redhawks moving, but Oregon held a 39-14 advantage after 10 minutes.
Jagger scored first in the second frame and then Williams swished a trey and finished inside. A Howard layup was SU's only answer as the hosts pulled away on the strength of Taylor Mikesell's seven first-half three-pointers.
In the third quarter, Williams carried the Redhawk attack, scoring eight points, as the redshirt junior repeatedly worked her way to the free-throw line. She leads the nation in free throw makes through two games, having converted 21-25 foul shots this season.
Coach Suzy Barcomb was able to use her depth, as freshmen Irena Korolenko, Erin Tarasow, Hannah Martin, and Helen Sauvage made their Redhawk debuts on Saturday.
Seattle U returns home to host Utah State on Thursday, Dec. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
