PORTLAND, Ore. — With contribution from up and down the roster, Seattle University men's basketball improved to 2-0 on the year with a 77-53 win over William Jessup University Friday afternoon at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus. This marks the first 2-0 start to a season since 2008-09.
The Redhawks (2-0) used a big 22-0 run early in the game to open up a 25-6 advantage over the Warriors. Rip Economou helped get things going with a pair of three pointers. Riley Grigsby had seven points in the first half and Darrion Trammell added six as eight total Redhawks scored in the frame.
The Seattle U defense was superb, forcing a nine-minute William Jessup scoring drought and just 8-of-25 (32 percent) from the field. The Redhawks also forced nine first-half turnovers for 13 points.
Seattle U led by as many as 22, 34-12, late in the first half following a triple from Grigsby. But the Warriors would put together a small surge late, pulling within 14, 37-23, at the break.
The Redhawks maintained the double-digit lead throughout the second half, never allowing the Warriors closer than 13. Despite holding William Jessup to just 7-of-21 (33 percent) from the field in the second, the Warriors did earn 18 trips to the charity stripe, sinking 14 chances.
"Give a lot of credit to William Jessup, they played really hard today," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "Our defense was a little too much and we were able to hold them to 32 percent shooting. We also took care of the basketball with just nine turnovers. But there's a lot of things we could do better. We're a lot better shooting team than we showed today, but give William Jessup some credit for that."
"As we now get into back-to-back games with Air Force and CSUN on Sunday and Monday, I hope that we can shoot the ball better on the second day."
Two days after hitting a solid 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from three, the Redhawks managed just 7-of-27 )25.9 percent) from deep.
Trammell scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half. The sophomore also had nine rebounds and four assists. Grigsby finished with 14 points and four boards while Emeka Udenyi had 11 points and eight rebounds.
All 11 Seattle U dressed players saw action while 10 tallied at least two points.
The season-opening seven-game road swing continues on Sunday and Monday as the Redhawks head to the 2020 Men's Vegas Bubble where they will face Air Force and CSUN. For the most up-to-date schedule information, continue to check the men's basketball schedule page at GoSeattleU.com.
