Redhawk Tribune: Georgia Kehoe

I felt an overwhelming sadness not merely for myself, but for my fellow teammates, coaches and all the other teams who I know have worked so hard all season. I want to give a special shout out to my seniors as, even know they all held it together, I know this wouldn't have been even close to how they expected their final season to end.

This season has been full of ups and downs. We started and progressed throughout the season with what was, in my opinion, quite a valuable chip on our shoulders after seeing the rankings for the year. Every single coach, player and staff member for the Seattle University women's basketball team knew, for a fact, that we were going to come out with a bang. And we did, we crushed goals, records, and (well obviously) other teams. The WAC is combined of some really outstanding teams; this is what makes it so much fun to play in, be a part of and watch. This also means however, that every team, no matter what ranking, has just as good of a chance to win it all. This has been evident in the 2019-20 season and if we had gotten the chance to, I believe that's how we would have concluded the season.

Fast forward to the WAC Tournament and the heartbreaking news that unfolded while we were in Vegas, our season abruptly ended and to make matters worse is was after our amazing quarterfinal win against the second seed. I know personally, after the news of the COVID-19 outbreak surfaced, resulting in not only the rest of our tournament being cancelled but all sports for the rest of the academic year, I felt an overwhelming sadness not merely for myself, but for my fellow teammates, coaches and all the other teams who I know have worked so hard all season. I want to give a special shout out to my seniors as, even know they all held it together, I know this wouldn't have been even close to how they expected their final season to end.

Along with the sadness of realising our season had just come to an unexpected end, for many of us there was added anxiety. We all had to come to the sudden realisation that this was so much bigger than basketball. The approaching pandemic meant many of us had to go home with little information on when we could return. I remember Courtney, Maddy and I were frantically trying to sort out flights back to Australia before we had even returned to Seattle yet. Everything turned out in the end and we all got home safely, and though this has been bittersweet because of how much I miss everyone in Seattle, I am so very grateful to be at home with my family at a time like this.

Although the next few months will be hard, I know and trust in the strength of my team and our ability to overcome adversity. Our amazing coaching, athletic, academic and athletic training staff have been available day in day out doing everything they can to help us through this unbelievable time. Coach Barcomb, especially, has been more help than she could imagine, and I personally would have lost my mind if not for her. Her commitment to each and every student athlete is just one example of true leadership.

While this time is truly heartbreaking for athletes everywhere, it is important to recognise the severity of this issue. I encourage everyone to take the right precautions and have faith in the fact that we will be back shortly for another amazing season next year.

See you next year,
