WAC TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: MBB vs Utah Valley

For the eighth consecutive year, Seattle University men's basketball heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for the 2020 Hercules Tires Western Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament Presented by TicketSmarter. The Orleans Arena once again hosts this year's tournament, which begins with four men's quarterfinal games Thursday, Mar. 12. The Redhawks (14-15, 7-7 WAC) earn the third seed and will face six-seed  Utah Valley (11-19, 5-10 WAC) at 8:30 p.m. PT on ESPN+. The winner will advance to face the winner of No. 2 UTRGV or No. 7 CSU Bakersfield in the semifinals on Friday at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN+. The tournament's championship game is set for Saturday, Mar. 14 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU.

WAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Seattle U brings a 4-7 record from seven previous WAC Tournament appearances into this year's event.
  • In 2018-29, the sixth-seed Redhawks dropped an 84-75 decision to third-seed Grand Canyon in the opening round of play.
  • In 2017-18, the fourth-seed Redhawks downed fifth-seed UTRGV 77-60 in the opening round, securing a 20-win season under then first-year Head Coach Jim Hayford. They would go on to take top-seed New Mexico State to the limit before falling, 84-79, to the eventual champs.
  • In 2016-17, the fifth-seed Redhawks went 0-1 with a 65-53 loss to fourth-seed Utah Valley in the opening round.
  • In 2015-16, the third-seed Redhawks topped sixth-seed UTRGV in the quarterfinals, 75-52, advancing to face eventual tournament champ CSU Bakersfield in the semifinals. The 'Runners sent SU to a 72-47 setback.
  • In 2014-15, third-seed Seattle U defeated sixth-seed Chicago State, 49-45, in the first round. The next night, Isiah Umipig tied a WAC Tournament record with eight made three-pointers to lead the Redhawks over UMKC, 69-63. In the championship game, New Mexico State scored the first nine points of the game on its way to an 80-61 victory over the Redhawks.
  • Entering the 2013-14 tournament as the seventh seed, the Redhawks battled second-seeded New Mexico State throughout the contest, holding a six-point lead halfway through the second half. After New Mexico State rallied back, Seattle U had a chance to send the game into overtime, but a last-second putback would not fall, giving the Aggies a 70-68 victory.
  • In 2012-13, the Redhawks lost to Texas State, 68-56, in the first round, as Seattle U was the 10th seed.

QUICK HITS

  • Seattle U enters the 2020 WAC Tournament as the third seed, matching the highest seed the program has earned in eight tournaments.
  • The Redhawks were last the three seed in 2015-16. They also earned the three-seed in 2014-15.
  • Seattle U wrapped up the regular-season with a 14-15 overall record and 7-7 WAC mark.
  • The regular-season was cut short for the Redhawks as both Chicago State and Kansas City chose not to travel to Seattle due to concerns related to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). While the games were officially deemed "no contest" per NCAA regulations, the Redhawks were awarded "wins" to determine WAC Tournament seeding.
  • Redshirt junior Terrell Brown was named a First Team All-WAC selection after leading the league in scoring at 20.7 ppg.
  • Terrell Brown earned three WAC Player of the Week honors during the regular-season.
  • Morgan Means and Terrell Brown both surpassed 1,000 career points during the season, becoming the third and fourth Seattle U player during the program's modern-day DI history to achieve the feat.

ABOUT THE SERIES VS UTAH VALLEY
Seattle U and Utah Valley are meeting for the 22nd time, with the Redhawks leading the series, 11-10 all-time. The Redhawks swept the 2019-20 regular-season home-and-home series. They won the first meeting, 83-50, in the Redhawk Center on Jan. 11, 2020. Riley Grigsby led SU with 17 points, Delante Jones had 13 and Terrell Brown had 12 as 10 total Redhawks scored in the runaway win. In Orem on Feb. 8, the Redhawks claimed a thrilling 87-85 overtime win on a game-winner from Morgan Means. Means finished with 19 points and six assists while Terrell Brown led all scorers with 28 points.

SU VS UTAH VALLEY IN THE WAC TOURNAMENT
The Redhawks and Wolverines have met just once in WAC Tournament play. In 2016-17, the fifth-seed Redhawks suffered a 65-53 loss to fourth-seed Utah Valley in the opening round.

BROWN EARNS FIRST TEAM ALL-WAC HONORS
The leading scorer during WAC play and among all league players for the entire 2019-20 season, Terrell Brown was named to the All-WAC First Team, announced Tuesday. Brown, a redshirt junior from Seattle, put up 21 points per game during WAC play, while also adding 5.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. He also led all players in minutes, averaging 37.4 per game. The 6-1 guard scored in double figures in all but one WAC game for Seattle U. He poured in 20 points or more on eight occasions, and turned in three 31-point efforts, his career high. Brown earned three WAC Players of the Week this season, bringing his career total to five in two seasons. The postseason honor marks the second year in a row Brown has been tabbed by the league. In 2018-19, he earned All-WAC second team honors as well as a spot on the WAC All-Newcomer team. Brown's milestone season has included surpassing 1,000 career points as a Redhawk, doing so in just 59 games.

GETTING TO THE STRIPE

  • Seattle U's free-throw shooting has been a high-mark of the season as the Redhawks are hitting at a 77.5 percent clip. That mark is 1st in the WAC and ranks 12th in the nation in games played through March 9. They also rank 27th in total makes.
  • The team percentage is a marked improvement from one year ago when the Redhawks finished the season shooting 71.6 percent from the line.
  • This season, the Redhawks have hit or surpassed 20 made free throws in a game nine times.
  • Morgan Means is among the top individual free-throw shooters in the nation, ranking 17th in games played through March 9 with an 88.2 percentage from the stripe.

PROTECT THE ROCK
Seattle U averages a WAC-low 10.2 giveaways per game, which also keeps pace among the nation's best. The Redhawks' mark ranks 8th among all NCAA DI teams in games played through March 9. They also rank 2nd in fewest total turnovers.

DISHING HIS WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOK
Terrell Brown dished two assists on Feb. 29 at California Baptist, bringing his season total assists to 141 and counting. The redshirt junior totaled 150 assists during his first season with the program in 2018-19. His current career total of 291 moves him into 7th on Seattle U's all-time top-10 list. Next on the list is dual-sport athlete Arne Klubberud (1995-99) who totalled 365 career assists. The all-time record holder is Dave Anderson (1981-85) with 619.

1,000 POINT CLUB PART ONE
Morgan Means scored seven points on Nov. 26 versus Western Michigan, giving him exactly 1,000 for his career. Most recently, the senior guard scored 24 points (Feb. 29 at California Baptist), bringing his current career total to 1,289. Means is the third Seattle U player to reach the 1,000-point mark in the modern DI era. Aaron Broussard (2009-12) finished his career with 1,271 while Isiah Umipig (2013-15) scored 1,164 career points.

1,000-POINT CLUB PART TWO
Redshirt junior Terrell Brown joined the 1,000-point club on Feb. 20 with his 25th point of the night. He went on to finish the night by matching his career-high of 31 points. He achieved the feat in just 59 games, the second fastest in the modern-day era to the 1,000-point marker behind Isiah Umipig, who did it in 57 games. Most recently (Feb. 29 at California Baptist), Brown scored 31 points, giving him 1,062 career points at Seattle U. Brown follows Morgan Means as just the fourth player in the program's modern-day DI era.
