RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Terrell Brown scored back-to-back buckets late in overtime Saturday night at California Baptist, single handedly willing the Redhawks into the lead. But CBU's Milan Acquaah would answer with a step-back jumper with three ticks on the clock and a a final half court heave would fall short as Seattle U men's basketball came up short in a senior day spoiler, 88-87, at the CBU Events Center.
Brown, who finished with a game-high 31 points, scored all 10 Redhawk points in overtime. He was joined in double figures by Morgan Means with 24, Riley Grigsby with 14 and Anand Hundal with 11.
Dejon Davis had 31 for the Lancers (21-8, 10-4 WAC), including 20 in the first half. Acquaah added 27, including nine of CBU's 11 in the extra frame.
The home team led for nearly the entire first half, mounting a 31-21 lead behind the play of the senior Davis.
The Redhawks (14-15, 7-7 WAC) struggled from the field early, going 0-of-9 from beyond the arc before Means hit one with 3:02 remaining in the half. They would eventually get things going, using a 13-3 run late to take a 32-31. Davis would hit a triple with 55 second on the clock to send CBU into the locker room with a 34-32 advantage.
After going 1-of-12 from deep in the opening frame, it was the three-ball that helped the Redhawks build momentum in the second.
Jordan Dallas opened the period with a triple and a stretch of three in a row by the Redhawks, including back-to-back from Anand Hundal, helped Seattle U into a 54-47 advantage with 10-34 on the clock.
The Redhawks would lead for much of the frame until Acquaah led the charge back for CBU. The Lancer guard would score six straight, then dish a helper to Brandon Boyd to pull the Lancers within two, 73-71.
Free throws by Davis and Acquaah would account for CBU's final six points of regulation and combat a pair of buckets by Brown to send the game into extra time.
Brown and Acquaah would nearly go one-on-one in the overtime period, save a pair of Boyd free throws for CBU. Brown's layup in the paint with 22 seconds remaining put the Redhawks up one, 87-86, but Acquaah would answer with the step-back jumper to give the home team the win.
"I'm really proud of my team," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "We went into a hostile environment, took it to overtime, played really well, made some great plays, and they made the last great play. Credit to CBU, Acquaah made a big shot there at the end."
The Redhawks return home next week for their final two regular-season games, beginning Thursday, Mar. 5 against Chicago State. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the WAC Digital Network and can be heard on KTTH 770 AM.
